A responsible consumption initiative
To increase awareness of the essential role dairy products have in a balanced diet and their production methods.
What we're proud of
The French dairy industry’s quality and diversity are its two major advantages. It has been able to preserve its traditional processes while innovating and maintaining exemplary sanitary conditions. This expertise means an offer of 1,500 different dairy products including 1,200 cheeses.
The industry is open to consumers and their expectations. Dairy products are part of French cultural heritage and give a genuine representation of the image of French fine food overseas. Industry stakeholders are proud of their healthy, safe, ethical, sustainable and affordable products but they are also aware that trust and a good reputation are earned by transparency. With barely processed products and high nutritional quality accessible to everyone, the industry supports French expertise in favor of responsible consumption.
Accessible and easy to use, milk and dairy products represent the basis of a healthy and affordable diet.
Mass consumer dairy products are affordable for less well-off populations whilst guaranteeing nutritional goodness and a balanced diet.
AN INDUSTRY THAT EXPORTS
Dairy products are strong cultural markers. France is the leading butter consumer and the second largest cheese consumer per person in the world.
Dairy products are an integral part of French cooking. French cheese is celebrated around the world. A flavor enhancer, butter is crucial to the creativity of chefs. They flavor it, blend it, infuse it, color it… In catering and pastry making, French cream meets the same very high standards. Their fine taste and remarkable performance for all kinds of cooking are particularly appreciated: their quality with regards to volume, texture, regularity and stability.
As French food is recognized around the world, France’s dairy expertise is equally appreciated outside of its borders. Out of every 10 liters of milk collected in France, 4 liters are exported. 66% goes to the European Union. France is the 3rd largest European exporter in value. The industry exports more than 7 billion euros of dairy products a year. Global consumption of dairy products is increasing 2.5 % a year, stimulated by emerging countries. France primarily exports cheese and powdered milk.
Our aims for tomorrow
The France Terre de Lait initiative must enable the industry to continue to earn the trust of consumers. To achieve this, it is important to provide reliable and transparent information about the origin of milk and its quality, about production methods and dairy product manufacturing and processing. To keep tantalizing consumers, the dairy industry helps finance research programs to extend knowledge about product composition, nutritional benefits and their connection with health.
To promote responsible French export in terms of local industries and food cultures, French dairy farmers and processors are focusing their export strategy on addedvalue products as in addition to the local offer from emerging countries, rather than competing with them. With its corporate social responsibility initiative France Terre de Lait, the industry is making the choice to pursue these efforts and continue to export French dairy products without replacing the local offer.
